"The reason I love Esperanza is that it is a really positive environment for girls. When I am here I can tell they are excited about learning new things."

Community Service

The goal of Esperanza's Community Service Learning Program is for our girls to learn about the different needs in their community and experience the joy and satisfaction of responding to these needs. We want our girls to become socially aware of human circumstances outside of their typical classroom and home experience.

Every week, 11 of the girls give one service hour to a local community service organization that would benefit from the service hours our girls can provide. Two teachers accompany and supervise 11 girls each week during their off-site community service hour.

Partnering with other organizations, we hope to foster a sense of social responsibility and committment to the Lawrence community in our young girls. Esperanza is dedicated to making sure our girls are equipped with not only academic excellence but a strong morality and value structure in authentic situations.

Some of the activities the girls have taken part in:

  • YMCA: volunteering in pre-school classes (reading to kids, working on art projects, playing etc.)
  • Bread and Roses: creating Thanksgiving centerpieces for the Bread and Roses Thanksgiving Day Dinner.
  • Creating a recycling program for our school.
  • Lawrence Senior Center: creation of signs for annual Lawrence health fair.
  • YMCA Teen Living Program and OASIS Program (women victims of domestic violence): girls created Valentine's Day cards for the children of women in these two programs.
